Fundamental Music Therapy for children with Autism (FMA)

FMA is a specialised approach within music therapy that can be traced back to the mid-20th century, with early pioneers such as Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins developing innovative approaches to using music to engage and connect with children on the autism spectrum.

01

Enhanced Communication Skills

FMA provides a non-verbal medium for communication, allowing children with autism to express themselves through music. Melodies stimulate the language centres of the brain. Engaging in singing, playing instruments, and rhythmic activities, they can develop communication skills, such as turn-taking, imitation, and expressive language.

03

Better Emotional Regulation

Music has the power to evoke and regulate emotions. FMA helps children with autism identify and express their emotions through music, leading to increased emotional awareness and regulation skills. By engaging in activities such as songwriting, improvisation, and guided listening, they can learn to manage stress, anxiety, and frustration more effectively.

02

Improved Social Interaction

Through collaborative music-making experiences, they can practice social skills, such as sharing, listening, and taking turns, in a supportive and inclusive environment. FMA includes musical activities that incentivise  interactions  with the therapist or his/her peers during a group session.

04

Improved Motor Coordination

The activities involve playing musical instruments, manipulating objects, and engaging in fine motor movements such as finger tapping, drumming, or strumming thus improving hand-eye coordination. sessions often incorporate movement-based activities such as dancing, marching, or playing large percussion instruments working on gross-motor skills as well.
